Houston Rockets vs Dallas Mavericks recap: final score and what we learned (Week of Oct 30–Nov 5, 2026)

NBA Audit · Week of Oct 30–Nov 5, 2026 · Game recap

The Dallas Mavericks took the "is Houston's run real?" question and answered it with a 116-111 win. The Houston Rockets arrived with five straight wins and a scoring profile that scared people. They left with a loss, and the Mavericks, a middling team on paper, have a result that will get them talking.

The result

Five points separated the teams, and the box score tells a clear story about how Dallas got there. The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field, hitting 42 of 81. Houston hit 40 shots, but it needed 96 attempts to do it, which works out to 42 percent.

The three-point line was the loudest split. Dallas made 12 of 33 from deep, 36 percent. Houston made 7 of 29, just 24 percent. For a team that thrives on scoring, that's a tough night to absorb.

Houston did plenty to stay in it. The Rockets grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to Dallas's 12, finished with 48 total boards to the Mavericks' 41, and picked up 12 steals to Dallas's 8. They also got to the line more, making 24 of 33 against Dallas's 20 of 27. Assists were close, 26 for Houston and 24 for Dallas. Houston created extra chances, but it couldn't turn them into enough efficient points.

How our preview held up

Not well, and we should say so. The preview made no pick, but it leaned clearly toward Houston having the better night. It cited the higher scoring rate (122.6 points per game), the stingier defense (110.3 allowed) and the perfect recent run. It also called Dallas's profile a hard one, since the Mavericks were giving up 116.2 against 114.1 scored.

The preview's core argument was that Houston's offense against Dallas's defense was the decisive pairing. That didn't play out. Dallas finished with 116 points, more than the 110.3 Houston typically allows, and Houston finished well below its 122.6 scoring average.

The preview did flag the swing factor. It said Dallas could keep the game tight if it changed its own shape for a night. The Mavericks' shooting efficiency did exactly that. We'll also note the preview said both teams were at full strength, so there's no injury excuse to hide behind for the misread. We leaned on season-long numbers and gave too little weight to how much one efficient shooting night can matter.

What it means

For Dallas, this is a useful result. The profile still shows a team that concedes more than it scores, so one win doesn't erase that concern. But beating a team on a five-game winning run, with that kind of shooting efficiency, is the sort of game that builds belief in a group that had been middle of the pack.

For Houston, don't overreact. The rebounding, steals and free throw numbers suggest the Rockets' effort and pressure were there. The cold night from three and the volume of misses were the problem, and those are more fixable than a broken defense or a stalled offense. Still, the winning streak is over, and the next test is whether the Rockets' shooting bounces back.

The takeaway is simple: season averages tell you who a team is, but one night of shooting can flip the script. Dallas had that night, and Houston didn't.
