NFL Audit — 2026 Week 9
2026 Week 9 · published 2026-11-03
The biggest storyline this week is the Cincinnati Bengals' offense meeting an Atlanta Falcons team that just got shut out. Cincinnati is scoring 29.4 points a game, the best number among the teams in this week's matchups. They've won three in a row, most recently a 43–36 shootout with the Tennessee Titans. Atlanta, meanwhile, lost 0–16 at Tampa Bay and now hosts the team with the loudest offense in the group. Joe Burrow's passing-yardage rate is the loudest individual number in the entire player pool.
That doesn't make this a lock, because nothing in this sport is. Atlanta's own scoring average is 21.4, and one dud doesn't erase it. But this is the game that tells us whether Cincinnati's offense is as dominant as the averages say, or whether it's mostly a product of shootouts.
2026 Week 9 snapshot
The scoring picture this week is lopsided. Cincinnati leads the group at 29.4 points a game, with the Detroit Lions right behind at 29 and the Jacksonville Jaguars at 28. At the other end, the Los Angeles Chargers average just 14.1, and they've lost seven straight. No team in the group is struggling to put points up more than that.
The widest scoring gap among the games is Detroit at Miami. The Lions average 29 against the Dolphins' 16.7, a gap of 12.3 points a game. Most of the other games also tilt toward the road team, including Jacksonville at Baltimore, Cincinnati at Atlanta, Dallas at Indianapolis, and Houston at the Chargers. The home side holds the scoring edge in just four spots: Kansas City over the New York Jets, New Orleans over Cleveland, Carolina over Denver, and, narrowly, nowhere else. Washington versus the Los Angeles Rams is the tightest gap of the bunch at 1.5.
Featured matchups
Jacksonville at Baltimore is the game with the sharpest contrast in momentum. The Jaguars just flattened Indianapolis 42–7 and allow only 15.9 points a game, while Baltimore has dropped three straight after a 10–36 loss at Buffalo. The Ravens' injury list is also long, with a dozen names carrying listings, most of them on injured reserve. Two more were listed as expected back this week. Baltimore has to find some answers at home before this becomes a bigger problem.
Dallas at Indianapolis pairs a Cowboys team that just lost 30–33 to Arizona with a Colts team that has lost four straight and got blown out by Jacksonville. Dallas scores 27.4 a game but allows 26.6, so the offense is carrying the load. Indianapolis scores 20.1 and allows 27.8. Javonte Williams, at 105.5 rushing yards a game, is the kind of workhorse who could make that defensive number hurt.
Kansas City hosts the New York Jets in a meeting of two teams on skids. The Chiefs have lost two straight, the latest a 24–28 loss to Denver, while the Jets have lost three straight after a 33–38 loss to Las Vegas. Kansas City's defense is the difference on paper, allowing 18.7 a game against the Jets' 23.5 allowed. The Chiefs hold the home scoring edge here, but this is a game about which team stops the bleeding first.
Detroit at Miami is the widest gap, and the Lions arrive on a three-game winning streak after a 19–15 win over Minnesota. Miami lost 19–24 to New England. Jahmyr Gibbs' 153 rushing yards a game against a Dolphins defense allowing 25.9 is the matchup to circle.
New Orleans hosts Cleveland, and the Saints get the home scoring edge at 23.1 against 17.4. The injury list matters in this one. New Orleans has four players listed as questionable for this game, including Nathan Shepherd, Cesar Ruiz, CJ Donaldson and Justin Reid. Both teams are coming off losses to Pittsburgh.
Philadelphia hosts the New York Giants, and the Eagles are in a rough stretch, having lost six straight. They fell 10–27 to Washington, while the Giants beat Houston 27–21. Philadelphia scores 17.1 a game, and the Giants have the scoring edge.
Washington versus the Los Angeles Rams is the closest game on paper. The Commanders beat Philadelphia 27–10, and the Rams beat the Chargers 24–9 for their second straight win. The Rams allow 21 a game to Washington's 26, which could decide it if the scoring stays close.
Carolina hosts Denver, and this one has the most interesting form clash. The Broncos have won four in a row, including the 28–24 win over Kansas City. The Panthers have lost two straight, the latest a 19–27 loss at Green Bay. Carolina scores more at 25.4 against Denver's 21.5, but the Broncos' defense allows 20.6 to Carolina's 27.6. Will Lee III is listed as questionable for the Panthers.
Houston at the Chargers closes out the group. The Texans lost 21–27 to the Giants, but they face a Chargers team scoring 14.1 a game and still looking for a win.
Team form (week matchups)
Cincinnati is 6.8 points above the league average in scoring and allows 22.6. Detroit is 6.4 above and allows 25.7, so the Lions' defense is the question mark. Jacksonville is 5.4 above the average on offense, and its defensive number against the league average is the best of any team here, which is why that win over Indianapolis looked so complete.
Dallas is 4.8 above on offense but allows 26.6, which is why the Cowboys end up in so many close games. Carolina is 2.8 above and allows 27.6. The Rams are 1.6 above on offense and allow 21, a quietly balanced profile for a team that has won two straight.
Kansas City's offense is just 1.3 above average, but its defense is the second-best number in the group. Denver's profile is the reverse: below average on offense but strong on defense, and the Broncos have won four straight with it.
At the bottom, Baltimore's three-game slide, Indianapolis's four straight losses, Philadelphia's six, and the Chargers' seven all carry real weight. Those are the teams that need a result this week more than anyone.
Player rates in this week's matchups
All of the player numbers here are per-game rates over the last 14 games. Joe Burrow leads the passing group at 462 yards a game, well clear of Deshaun Watson at 324 and Patrick Mahomes at 321. Geno Smith of the Jets is at 290, and Tyler Shough of New Orleans is at 278.
On the ground, Jahmyr Gibbs leads at 153, followed by the Jets' Braelon Allen at 147 and the Giants' Cameron Skattebo at 124. Javonte Williams of Dallas is at 105.5 and Jacksonville's Bhayshul Tuten is at 104.
Through the air, Tee Higgins leads receivers at 155, with Cleveland's Harold Fannin Jr. just behind at 154. Adonai Mitchell of the Jets is at 142, Ja'Marr Chase at 141, and Kansas City's Emmett Johnson at 128. Cincinnati having both Higgins and Chase in that group is a big reason the Bengals' offense is the story of the week.
Notes on the numbers
Each team is graded on points scored and allowed per game for this week's featured set. Every offense is then lined up against the defense it actually faces.

2026 Week 9 matchup comps — offense vs the defense it faces
Home PPG is what the home offense usually scores; Away PPG allowed is what the visitor’s defense usually gives up — Home off vs away def is simply that offense minus that defense (positive means the home attack outpaces this opponent). The mirror columns do the same for the away offense against the home defense.
