NFL fantasy football 2026 Week 9: players to start, matchups to target and injury watch
NFL Audit · 2026 Week 9 · Fantasy
If you only take one thing into your lineups this week, make it this: start the Cincinnati Bengals' passing game and don't overthink it. The Bengals travel to face an Atlanta Falcons defense that allows 23.6 per game, and the matchup rating for Cincinnati is 5.8, the second-best of the week. Joe Burrow is averaging 462 passing yards per game through Week 8. Tee Higgins is at 155 receiving yards per game and Ja'Marr Chase is at 141. When the production is that loud and the matchup is this friendly, you start all three and move on.
Matchups to target
The top rating this week belongs to the Baltimore Ravens at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, at 6.5. Here's the wrinkle: Jacksonville's defense allows only 15.9 per game, the stingiest figure in this group. So this is less a "soft defense" story than an "offense that should still get what it wants" story. I'd lean on Baltimore's skill players, but I wouldn't pretend the Jaguars are a pushover.
The Jaguars have their own case, too. Their rating on the road in Baltimore is 2.6, and the Ravens allow 25.4 per game. Bhayshul Tuten is at 104 rushing yards per game through Week 8, and that makes him a very playable flex-type option in a game where both sides rate positively.
The Carolina Panthers at home against the Denver Broncos come in at 4.8. Chuba Hubbard's 81 rushing yards per game won't make anyone spit out their coffee, but in a favorable spot that's a steady floor you can use.
The Detroit Lions at Miami are the other one to circle, at 3.1, with the Dolphins allowing 25.9 per game. Jahmyr Gibbs is at 153 rushing yards per game through Week 8. He's a start in every format, and this matchup only adds to the case.
Players in form
Beyond the Cincinnati trio, a few names deserve a look. Patrick Mahomes is at 321 passing yards per game at home against the New York Jets, who allow 23.5 per game. The matchup rating there is a modest 0.4, so this is a start on talent rather than a smash spot.
The Jets' side is more interesting than you'd expect. They visit a Kansas City Chiefs defense that allows 18.7 per game, yet the matchup rating is a positive 2.5. Geno Smith is at 290 passing yards per game. Adonai Mitchell is at 142 receiving yards per game and Braelon Allen is at 147 rushing yards per game. If you've been rolling with them, I wouldn't bench them out of fear.
Emmett Johnson is at 128 receiving yards per game for Kansas City, and the Jets' defense gives him a manageable spot at home.
Tyler Shough of the New Orleans Saints is at 278 passing yards per game with a home date against Cleveland, which allows 21.6 per game. The rating is 1.5. That's a quiet, useful week for a streaming-type option.
Dallas's Javonte Williams is at 105.5 rushing yards per game, and the Indianapolis Colts allow 27.8 per game. The rating is only -0.4, though, so treat him as a solid starter and not a must-play banger.
Injury watch
The injury report is in, and the only team with listed entries is the Baltimore Ravens. That's relevant given how much I like their matchup.
T.J. Tampa was listed as questionable for the Week 8 game at Buffalo with a knee issue. Vega Ioane (knee, MCL) and Jaylinn Hawkins (knee) were both out for that game, with an expected return in Week 9. Those designations were attached to last week's game, so confirm their status again before you set your lineup.
Baltimore also has a long injured-reserve list: Ethan Pocic (knee), Adam Randall (neck), Bilhal Kone (lower body), Tavius Robinson (pectoral), Durham Smythe (Achilles), Jovaughn Gwyn (ankle), Danny Pinter (knee), Skylar Thompson (undisclosed) and Jahquez Robinson (undisclosed). None of that changes how I'd approach the matchup on its face, but it's a reminder that depth matters here. I'd keep an eye on Baltimore's late news before locking in anyone from that offense.
Proceed with caution
The Cleveland Browns at the New Orleans Saints are the toughest matchup on the list, at -10.3, even though the Saints allow 27.7 per game. That tension is exactly why this one is tricky. Deshaun Watson is at 324 passing yards per game and Harold Fannin Jr. is at 154 receiving yards per game, and I'm not telling you to bench them outright. Just temper your expectations, and don't treat either as a locked-in ceiling play.
The Los Angeles Chargers at home against the Houston Texans sit at -10.1. Justin Herbert is at 257 passing yards per game through Week 8. That's good enough to keep him in most lineups, but this isn't the week to push him over a better option.
The Dolphins' rating against Detroit is -9, and the Colts' rating against Dallas is -6.5. If you have alternatives for Miami or Indianapolis players, use them.
The New York Giants at Philadelphia land at -2. Malik Nabers is at 111 receiving yards per game and Cameron Skattebo is at 124 rushing yards per game. The Eagles allow 25.3 per game, so it's not a disaster. But it isn't a spot to chase either. Start both, just don't expect fireworks.
