Las Vegas Raiders vs New York Jets recap: final score and what we learned (2026 Week 8)

NFL Audit · 2026 Week 8 · Game recap

The Las Vegas Raiders found a way. They beat the New York Jets 38-33, a 5-point win that ends the four-game losing streak we flagged in the preview. The Raiders didn't win the yardage battle or the ground game. They won the scoreboard and the turnover column, and in the NFL that's the one that gets you out of a skid.

The result

This was a strange box score. The Jets piled up 439 yards at 7.2 yards per play, while the Raiders finished with 333 at 5.6. New York had 26 first downs to Las Vegas's 22. By most of the usual markers, the Jets looked like the team that should have won.

The ground game was lopsided too, and not in Vegas's favor. The Jets ran for 166 yards at 6.1 per carry. The Raiders managed 95 on 33 attempts, just 2.9 per rush. Through the air, the Jets threw for 273 yards at 8 per pass, and the Raiders threw for 238 at 8.8 per pass, so Vegas was the more efficient passing team.

Then there's the turnover line, which is where the game turned on paper. The Jets threw 1 interception. The Raiders gave the ball away 0 times. When a team loses by 5 after outgaining its opponent by that much, a single giveaway is the first place to look.

How our preview held up

The preview made no pick, so there's no pick to grade. The analysis is another matter, and it came out mixed.

We said the question was whether the Raiders' high-scoring offense was a real strength. Thirty-eight points is a loud answer, and we leaned toward Las Vegas in scoring, so that part looks good. We also warned that the Raiders' defense, which allowed 28.1 points per game, left little margin for error. Giving up 33 and 439 yards backs that up. The offense had to carry them again.

Where we missed was the run game. We called Vegas effectively throw-first and the Jets the more balanced team. The Jets did run well, as we suggested a balanced attack could. But we expected that balance to be an edge against a leaky defense, and it didn't translate into a win. We also had the Jets' scoring as below average, with 19.6 points per game, and 33 points is well beyond that. That one was too low.

What it means

For the Raiders, the result is relief, but it should come with caution. The skid is over, yet the defense still gave up yardage and points in volume, and the ground attack was thin. Winning with 0 turnovers is repeatable. Winning while allowing 439 yards probably isn't, week after week.

For the Jets, this is the more frustrating loss. The offense moved the ball efficiently on the ground and through the air, which is the kind of performance you'd normally build on. But the preview was right that another loss would change the tone around this team, and now it has. The question is whether one interception and a thin margin are a fluke, or whether this team keeps finding ways to fall just short.

Either way, the Raiders have a win and the Jets have a long week ahead.
